What is Kidney Cancer?

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is considered to be one of the most complicated cancers to treat. It is most prevalent amongst men aged 40 to 60. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances and exposure to chemical agents or radiation. Manor Medical Center has developed a highly efficient kidney cancer treatment in Israel program, with investigations and subsequent treatments performed at top-of-the-line medical facilities without unnecessary delays.

The main kidney cancer symptoms are:

  • Blood in urine
  • Lower back pain
  • Palpable renal masses

If all 3 symptoms are seen, the tumour has reached an advanced stage, so immediate treatment is required.

Kidney Cancer Treatment in Israel

There is no time to lose when RCC is suspected. This is why your treatment will start the day following your arrival in Israel. First, one of our coordinators will pick you up for the laboratory tests. You will then have a whole body CT, which will help determine (based on contrast uptake intensity) the exact location of the tumour and whether extra-renal spread is present. An abdominal US Doppler scan (performed by an expert radiologist) will follow. The results will be available immediately following the investigations. In cases where decrease in the affected kidney’s function is suspected, a DMSA scan is also performed.

Work-up

  • Full blood workup (CBC, CMP, coagulation factors, PSA, electrolyte levels, lipid profile,); urine tests (urinalysis, biochemical analysis & culture)
  • Abdominal ultrasound with Doppler
  • CT of chest, abdomen & pelvis
  • Optional: DMSA renal scan
  • Urologic oncologist consultation

The final price of treatment will depend on type and stage of the disease and treatment required.

Treatment

Following the investigation, you will be referred to one of Israel’s top urologic oncologists, who will draft the treatment protocol. If a surgery is indicated, it will take place at the state-of-the-art private Assuta Hospital. Whenever possible, surgical kidney cancer treatment in Israel involves a laparoscopic operation, during which only the damaged renal tissue is removed. Entrusting the procedure to world-class surgeons means that the duration of the renal ischemia (amount of time blood flow to the kidney is clamped) is maximally shortened, thus preserving as much function as possible. Express biopsy and evaluation of resection margins also take place during the operation.

In 95% of cases when the disease had been diagnosed prior to having metastasized, no further treatment is required. The patient is instructed to only routinely follow up with their treating urologic oncologist and undergo the necessary investigations (CT and blood work). This means that seeking kidney cancer treatment in a timely manner can spare you from having to undergo chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Price of treatment package involves the following:

  • Preoperative preparation (ECG, chest X-ray and an anesthesiologist consultation)
  • Operative procedure and 4 day of hospitalization at a fully-equipped semi-private room
  • Pathological study
  • Surgical materials

It is advised you remain in Israel for 7 days following your discharge from the hospital.

** Please note that the procedure can be performed utilizing the da Vinci Surgical System. This will significantly decrease post-operative pain and shorten your recovery period.

Please Note

The suggested treatment program (with a specialist recommended by us) will take place at Assuta Medical Center. If you would like, we can instead arrange the treatment at one of Israel’s public hospitals. In such case, the cost of the surgery (not including the logistics package) will be 20 to 30 per cent lower. However, while we can definitely guarantee that the surgery will be performed by one of that hospital’s top experts, the name of the particular expert will be selected based on their rotation schedule.
