Hallux valgus (bunion) is a fairly common joint deformity, characterized by deviation of the big toe (hallux) towards the other toes. While initially it may not cause painful sensations, left untreated it will progress over time. Bunions are caused by joint dysfunction due to pes lateral, tendon weakness, certain neurological conditions and congenital foot deformities. Tight, uncomfortable shoes, especially with heels can cause the symptoms to become more pronounced. The condition is often accompanied by arthrosis and/or arthritis. The most effective method of treatment is a bunion surgery.

How is Bunion Surgery Performed in Israel?

Hallux valgus surgery takes place at one of the top facilities in Israel – Assuta Tel Aviv Medical Center. The scientific name for the operation you will undergo is “Modified Chevron osteotomy”, though it's more commonly referred to as "bunion removal". During the procedure the surgeon will correct the position of your 1^st metatarsal bone and fix it with metal screws (for example Acutrak). There is usually no blood loss involved, and in most cases you will be discharged within 24 hours.

You will need to stay in Israel for a further 4-5 days following your discharge from the hospital (on postoperative day 1).
