The term scoliosis refers to a condition where a person’s spine curves sideways. It usually develops in children, and becomes more pronounced as they grow. Scoliosis can be C-shaped (simplest kind, involves one arc of curvature), S-shaped (two arcs of curvature) and Z-shaped (three arcs). In 80% of cases the cause of scoliosis is not known. Choosing to undergo scoliosis treatment in Israel means choosing to take advantage of the experience of some of the world’s leading surgeons, who utilize state-of-the-art techniques and tools.

Scoliosis Treatment in Israel – Methods & Costs

Currently there are two methods of treating scoliosis:

  • A conservative approach, which involves wearing a custom-made brace. It is usually used in young patients (children and teenagers), whose bone growth plates are still open.
  • Surgical treatment, which is usually indicated if the patient’s bone growth plates have already closed.

An orthopedist specializing in scoliosis treatment will determine your therapy protocol based on the results of a spine X-ray. A spinal MRI scan may also be required.

Cost of scoliosis surgery for adults will depend on its length and number of implants required and whether intensive care equipment is needed (operations for children don’t normally require intensive care equipment).

Surgery for Adults

Thus, the price of surgery for adults will be comprised of the following:

  • Routine preoperative preparation including an ECG, chest X-ray, blood workup and a spinal anesthesiologist consultation
  • Special implants (fixators)
  • Operative procedure and 7 days of hospitalization at a private room at Assuta Hospital’s Department of Orthopedics (optional: 1 night of hospitalization in ICU)
  • Intensive care equipment and blood transfusions
  • Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM)
  • Spinal anesthesiologist’s fee

Surgery for Children

Price of scoliosis surgery for children will be made up of the following:

  • Routine preoperative preparation including an ECG, chest X-ray, blood workup and a spinal anesthesiologist consultation
  • Special implants (fixators)
  • Operative procedure and 7 days of hospitalization at a semi-private room at Assuta Hospital
  • Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM)
  • Spinal anesthesiologist’s fee

You will need to remain in Israel for approximately 14 days following your surgery for outpatient follow-up care (including prevention of post-operative complications such as lung atelectasis).

Please Note

The suggested treatment program (with a specialist recommended by us) will take place at Assuta Medical Center. If you would like, we can instead arrange the treatment at one of Israel’s public hospitals. In such case, the cost of the surgery (not including the logistics package) will be 20 to 30 per cent lower. However, while we can definitely guarantee that the surgery will be performed by one of that hospital’s top experts, the name of the particular expert will be selected based on their rotation schedule.
