Inguinal hernia (also called groin hernia) is a condition when contents of the abdominal cavity protrude into a passage in the anterior abdominal wall called the inguinal canal. In men this canal holds the spermatic cord and in women the round ligament of uterus. It can be diagnosed either based on the patient’s symptoms or by means of an imaging study. It is treated by means of an operative procedure called inguinal hernia repair.
About two thirds of people who develop the condition will experience symptoms, the most common ones being discomfort during exercise, bowel movements or when coughing. A bulging in the inguinal area may also be seen. Left untreated, the condition may lead to development of strangulated hernias, which are not only painful, but also dangerous, as they result in the the blood supply to the herniated intestine being cut off. Common inguinal hernia causes include obesity, previous appendectomy, smoking and COPD.
When the patient is a child, inguinal hernia repair is usually performed by means of an open operation, with a small incision being made. There usually is no need for surgical mesh.
For adults, the routine surgery of choice is endoscopic hernia mesh repair.
